Default How do you sight in a gun?

Shooting with inlaw I asked him if he knew which way to turn the scope screws to shoot more left or right. He told me in his 30 years he still has no idea, even with vertical adjustment and open sites. I believe this is a common problem many of us have. Personally I have to put my gun on a rest, shoot the target, then move my crosshairs by adjusting to where the bullset hit.
So how to you sight in a scope? If your bullets are shooting too far right do you turn the horizontal adjustment clockwise or counter clockwise? What if your shoot low do you turn the vertical screw clock wise or counter clockwise. Open sights same question.

RTFM (Read The Fucking Manual). Most manufactures of firearms and accessories have their manuals online.

But the few scopes I have worked on clockwise is left for windage and down for elevation.

The dials themselves bay be labeled with a letter L, R, U, D and an arrow. Pretty self explanatory then.

What make and model is it?

You could also use trial and error.

Start close with a large piece of cardboard if you cant get on the paper, do one axis at a time, dial it in, move the distance out, repeat.

Typically, its the direction of the bullet impact.

The bullet does not move when you adjust your scope.
The crosshairs have zero bearing on how the bullet leaves the bore.

No matter how you move the crosshairs, the bullet is going to "travel to the same spot as it did earlier.

If you are shooting high above the bullseye, move the knob to "down".

    Shooting low?
    Move the knob "up"

    Shooting right of the bull?
    Move knob "left".

    Shooting left of the bull?
    Knob goes "right".

    Rear sight:
If you are shooting low, you move your rear sight up, the way you want your group to move.
If you are shooting left, move your rear sight to the right, the way you want your group to move.
    Etc...

    Front sight:
Shooting low, move your front sight down
Shooting high, move front sight up
Shooting left, move front sight left
    Etc...
