Default HP Suggestions for RIA 1911A1 9mm

I just bought a brand new RIA GI 1911A1 9mm, and I was wondering if anyone had any comments for self defense ammo. The pistol was on sale from galleryofguns.com and Armscor/RIA was offering a $50 mail in rebate. All said and done, I got a brand new RIA GI 1911A1 9mm for $330-ish out the door. I was going to pick up some extra Speer 124 grain +p Gold Dots for it, but I wanted to make sure nobody had any problems using this SD ammo or other SD ammo with this pistol. Thank you!

I can not comment on the 9mm, but I carry the Hornady Critical Defense in mine, With critical duty in my Spare mag. Both feed without a problem. I would suspect strongly it is the same for a 9mm.

Let me also recommend photon engraving for quality grips.

I would say it depends on the gun. Whatever ammo you choose you should test as it can vary. Contact the manufacturer or check their site as they may be better able to assist you than a third party.

BTW you could have gotten a CZ999 for about that price which in general is probably a better gun. Just sayin. :P

Cz999 isn't a better gun. And the mags are not everywhere like a 1911 even in 9mm.

B-b-b-but double the capacity! And it feeds hollow tips fine! A-a-and its modern!

I would wager it is a better gun in just about every way technically speaking. The only downside is mag availability but they are out there if you take some time and look around, everything else is just technically better with opinions out of the way. Its a fun gun.

I like the Federal HST and Speer GoldDots. 124g or heavier in 9mm.

I'll second this. 124gr +P gold dots or HSTs.

It's a 1911 which means tuning the ramp (you have a two piece ramp and not a ramped barrel) is easier than most other guns, IMO. I'd buy what you want to use and try it. If it has failures, get the feed ramp tuned. It doesn't cost that much and you'll not be tied down to Hp's that you don't necessarily like.

BB has some 1400+ fps, nasty MF's that'll make you grin when you shoot cantaloupes with them. My PT 1911 9mm's eat them like Skittles, but they are over $1 a round. Grins don't come cheap, anymore, except for this one .

BCM and Glock...for a bigger pile of 'cold dead hands' brass.

Thanks for the advice, everybody. I bought hornady critical duty in 135 grain +p. They functioned perfectly and were producing very accurate groups. My ria 1911 eats them up. Also the boxes I got were not affected by the recall.
