Was this a scam, or am I just paranoid?

I pulled into a gas station and a cabbie said he prepaid too much and that he'd sell me the extra gas at $3.00 a gallon. Since I've never heard of a prepayment option where you didn't get change back if you overpaid, several thoughts went through my mind. Either he's ripping off his company by purposely pre-paying too much and pocketing the money from the sales of what he didn't put in his own tank. He didn't look the type to quickly figure out how many gallons he'd have available to sell based on dollars he over paid. I have no idea how much he actually paid, so how do I know the pump won't shut off the second he leaves with my money?

I told the guy I had no cash, flashed my Sunoco card to support my claim, and went about my business filling up at $4.15 per gallon. So did I snub a poor working stiff just trying to recoup his loss, or avoid being a victim of one of the newest scams in the post $100 a barrel era?

Cabbie sounds like a real JERK. Hope some poor sucker didn't fall for this crap...but somebody probably did.
