Default Advice on low recoil revolver

My Father has a new girlfriend. He is 72 and he met a sweet old lady who is 75. Pam is very much your stereotypical little old grandma. They both came over when I was shooting archery, she asked if I knew anything about pistols. I told her I have some experience. She then told me recently a store got robbed by her house so she bought her first pistol for protection (made me happy to hear that). She looked at guns in a catalog and ordered one that said it was good for home defense. She told me she wanted to take classes on how to shoot it and asked me to show her how it works sometime. I said sure what kind is it? She told me it is a Taurus Judge.
This lady is probably under 130lb. She is not a fit 75 yr old either. I told her that is a HUGE gun, especially for someone her size and experience. i recommend in maybe trading it in for something with less recoil. I told her I would give her some revolver suggestions when I did more research on them....

She wants a revolver and not a semi..... I know nothing about revolvers. any advice would be appreciated.

.38 has almost no recoil (unless a tiny snubby) and has plenty of hole and penetration for defense.

Is it even lower than 9mm. I saw a few 9mm out there too.

A judge for her is totally wrong. Once she actually shoots it (and she should before it is used for defense) she will be intimidated by it.

Definitely get her a .38 revolver with a 4-5 inch barrel. Have her practice with low powered target rounds till she is comfortable with it. Then consider giving her some +P rounds just to be used for defense.

For a .38 I prefer the S&W model 10 (or 15 with adjustable sites). A 686 in .357 mag (with .38's) is also good but a little heavier. Even lower kick but she should hold it first and see if she can handle it OK.

I think in this situation a revolver is the only way to go. Less to go wrong. Teach her about cocking the hammer to shoot single action. Her fingers might not be strong enough to shoot double action accurately.

I'd say a Ruger GP-100 with the 6" barrel would also be one to check out.

It has nowhere near the recoil of a 9mm.

Plus, a 9mm in a revolver requires clips (I think?) and that's just going to make it more complicated for a noob.

I'll agree with delkal the Model 10/15 was the first thing that came to mind for me.

Buds has police trade in model 10's right now for $300.

Any full size .38 or .357 with .38 loads is a pussy cat to shoot and is plenty capable for HD work.

You could also look into the .327mag Rugers. Light weight and not nearly the recoil of snubbies in .38/.357. If carry becomes an issue.

Don't get a .357. She's 75 and not fit. I know it can shoot .38s, but the gun will be heavy. Plain old .38s are pussycats to shoot. No added weight is needed.

Great suggestion on the model 10's from Buds. I think we have a winner.
