I'll be happy to hear from anyone with personal knowledge of these rifles. I'm doing some research, but I'm not coming up with a whole lot of solid info - mostly online forum postings. (and we all know how accurate THAT info can be)
Links to additional sources of info would be appreciated.

I can't wait to shoot it!

    FTFY 7.62x51/308 doh!

As I said before, Very Sweet. Enjoy shooting it.

Seems like that would make a truck gun. Almost like a scout rifle.

    According to wiki

The FR-7/FR-8 is an example of the type of carbine recommended by Jeff Cooper as a Scout rifle in the early 1970's, and bears a strong resemblance to the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle introduced in 2010

    Shouldn't that be?

The Ruger Gunsite Rifle that was introduced in 2010,which bears a strong resemblence to the Spanish FR8 which is an example of the type of carbine recommended by Jeff Cooper as a Scout rifle in the early 1970's,which was produced in the early 1950's ?

At this point could be the beer talking.

The tube under the barrel is for the cleaning kit,and also it has the lug for the bayonet.
It uses the same bayonet as the CETME rifle.

Indeed. Looks and feels more like fine furniture than a milsurp!

Doh! Thanks - I fixed it.
For now I'm having a blast shouldering it and going Pew! Pew! Pew!

In my Googling I've come across several examples of folks having taken the design in that direction by altering the forend and mounting a forward scope. If I had a beater gun I'd certainly entertain the idea of doing the same.

    Yup. ^^^

I was trying to post that info earlier this evening and everything froze up and I lost everything I had already typed and had to step out for a while.

Yeah, that "gas tube" is a pretty nifty solution actually.

As I understand it, in addition to re-barreling the Mauser with a CETME barrel, the front sight assembly is the same as well.

The two pics below were borrowed from another forum to show the comparison...

    (credit/source - NICE rifles!)

Note that the barrel on the CETME goes "through" the lower portion and the barrel on the FR8 goes through the upper portion with no need for the lower "ring".
Well, looks like someone came up with a pretty slick idea to not only fill that void, but they made it useful in two ways - as a space to carry a cleaning kit and as a bayonet mount.

    Here's how it comes off...

Press the detent button on the bottom of the front end and the tube slides right out! Note the "post" on the rear that fits into the hole in the "cap" at the front of the stock.

The end cap unscrews by grasping the tab that the bayonet locks onto and turning it. Ta-da! Cleaning kit inside!

This rifle did not have the cleaning kit with it, but a kind forum member supplied me with this one. I don't know if it's 100% correct, but it appears to have new string on it, and the little "oil packs" don't seem to fit with the brush in there. Pretty cool either way.
