help identify old military rifle
Can someone help me identify this rifle. It belongs to a good friend of mine who told me about it and that he might sell it. I asked for a picture of the barrel so maybe I could identify what it is. He says he has 4 rounds for the rifle and that they have the german eagle on them. This is the picture that he sent me can anyone tell me what it is?

That is actually the import mark that was put on it when it came into this country.
However it seems that he has a Austrian M95 Carbine chambered for 8x56R cartridges.Repeal the 17th Amendment

Re: help identify old military rifle
It should look like this:
This one is an infantry length model, there are shorter ones.
Sometimes the import mark is not correct, I have more than one CAI marked gun that is not correctly marked.
If the rifle is a straight pull bolt and has the same magazine well as mine pictured above, it is a Steyr M95 of some sort, if it looks vastly different, it's incorrectly marked.
There are other "makers" than Steyr as well (they are actually the city it was made in), such as Budapest.
More pics would help.Last edited by 39flathead; August 15th, 2014 at 11:10 PM.

Re: help identify old military rifle
Also, see that S on the chamber of the one above?
If yours does not have that, it may still be chambered in 8X50 Mannlicher.
This is not common, but possible.
There are also variants with a large H.
And to add more confusion, some were converted to 8mm mauser.
If you are unsure of what it is, have a gunsmith check it before attempting to fire it.
And lastly, if the received has a mark similar to this:
[SA] about 1/4 inch high, I'll buy it.
