Re: Moving to Pittsburgh Area
HAHA!
Even "east" isn't very specific. The "east" nearest the city is shit. The east just past that (where I am) is beng taken over by the shit that is moving away from the city. The "east" past "my" east is a little better, but will fall like a castle under siege within a few years (like my area did), and the "east" beyond that is rural enough that it's still nice, but who wants to drive to town to work from that far out?
Oh and yeah, the parkway east blows. Stupidest highway design EVER. Three lanes down to two lanes, then back to three, and then back to two - and let's throw a mother effin' TUNNEL into the mix. They say it was outdated when it was finished back in the 50s and I believe it.
We've been here 20 years and it was always bad during rush hour (3 hours), but now it's jammed at almost any time of day you drive it.
If I had a choice, I sure as fudge wouldn't move here now.I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

Re: Moving to Pittsburgh Area
You would be OK in the north, west and south hills. The thing about Pittsburgh is that there are a hundred ways to get anywhere, except for the east hills. West hills would probably be easiest. If you want a more rural setting, you can 20-30 min away and see nothing but farms in the south and west. Butthere is a large swath of suburban living between the city and the farms, and its growing bigger. I am south, near the Peters township/ Finleyville area, and they are building new homes at a staggering pace. What was farm land is now being built up. I bought my house just as all this building was taking off, and hope to see my property values continue to climb. But being just across the county line, my taxes are a lot less.
What kind of neighborhood do you want? New home plan with little trees, older suburban with mature trees and mountains of leaves or or houses so close you can make eye contact with the neighbor while showering? Its all there and not far away from each other, and l with a wide range of prices.

If it's Emsworth then yeah, Sewickley and Ohio Twp are decent places.
Check out places in the area of Mt. Nebo Rd. in Ohio Township. There are some nice houses there.
With Sewickley there are two different flavors - the town itself, which is a nice walkable community with a mix of people, and Sewickley Heights, where people with last names like "Mellon" or "Scaife" live.
To be fair, you could also look as far north as Cranberry Township. The commute won't be bad, and that would put you in Butler County, where I believe taxes will be a bit lower. Depends on how long you want to drive.
Good luck!

One thing to note is that if you move to Butler country (Cranberry, Mars) your property taxes are 1/2 what they are in Allegheny county but the commute into the city is a bit more. The mill rate for both Hampton and NA are quite high and you will be paying close to $10,000 on a $400,000 house. NA and Hampton have much better schools however so there is a trade off.
