    Question Wooden vs. Plastic Grips

I have a pistol that has a thumb rest on the side of the stock plastic grips that I"m not a fan of. Considering getting a set of wooden grips to replace them and eliminate the thumb rest.

Never used wooden grips before, so are there any disadvantages to them as far as grip or tearing up your hand? They'd be checkered.

Also considering making my own but they wouldn't be checkered, just smooth. Would that be a problem with grip?

    I know...dumb questions.

Looking at these, made of walnut:

I prefer wood grips over plastic. To me it just feels much better. It's probably not as harsh on the hands as plastic, the points on the checkering are sharper on all the ones I have/had. Rubber and G10 are much grippier but I've always preferred wood.

I prefer wood, ivory, or stag grips. Plastic or rubber to me are to be used on plastic guns.

Thanks...wouldn't mind rubber but can't find any PPK grips made of rubber. Don't want to do the sleeve thing.

Main objective here is eliminating the thumb rest.

Hogue shows them on their site for 25 bucks. They have quite a selection for the PPK.

I have plastic grips on one of my High Powers. They are comfortable. Black grips on a black gun has no contrast. I have walnut grips on the others. I like the looks and feel of the walnut ones better. Steel and wood FTW.

Thanks for the Hogue link. Those look good but I really like the wood look.

    Think I'll get them.

I also have a PPK that came with both types. The wood ones do not tear up the hand and are very comfortable. They are a little thicker by about 1/8" each. This fills the hand a bit more and feels very good. In a IWB holster carry it does not lay quite as flat. No real big deal, maybe under a T-shirt, but not with a jacket.
