Default Anyone have any Virginia CCW info?

My son recently moved down to Fairfax and he is looking into getting his CCW.

I'm not up on VA CCW info, so as I'm typing this, I'm also surfing the net. I think he has to take some kind of CCW course. I don't know if its all classroom or has a course of fire too.

He's also looking for some decent gun shops in the area. Anyone know of good places for him to check out?

You can get the VA CWP off the VA State Police website. Training is required, but it is a loose standard. Just like FL, Hunter Safety Course certificates/cards are allowed. Just about any NRA class cert is honored too if I remember correctly.

A hunter education certificate will satisfy any training requirements, similar to florida.

They pretty much nailed it, a hunters safety certificate will do, if not any basic NRA course will do the NRA Head quarters and range is in Fairfax, so he has a great place to go shoot.

Some counties/cities require printing, others do not.

I have an acquaintance that works for the NRA in Fairfax, I'll see where he recommends to go shopping.

I'd like to help more, but I'm on the other side of VA.

VA has reciprocity with PA I believe. So if your son has a PA LTCF, he should be able to carry in VA until his PA LTCF expires....or until he receives his VA permit.

But for more info visit: http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Firearms.shtm

OK, for gun shops I have two leads.

One is Blue Ridge Arsenal, and as a general great place to go is The Nations Gun Show, which is coming up in July.

The NRA HQ is right in Fairfax, just off Rt 50 and 66 on Waples Mill Rd. My wife is the Cust Svc specialist at the range there. They have been running 2 basic pistol classes per month all year...can't keep up with the demand with the election coming up. anyway, here's the number to call to register for the class..(703) 267-1400 . Monday night 6pm - 10pm and one hour of supervised shooting sometime Tuesday from 3pm - 10pm.

Once you have the class, fill out the form that you download from the state police website, get it notarized, send it in with your $50 and a sase, and you should have your CCW card in about 3wks.

When you call the range, ask for Sylvia...She'll tell you when the next class is and set you up.
