Default Advanced 1st Aid Training (TFR-Trauma First Response)

    Ladies and Gents,

Firstly, I hope I'm not violating any forum rules by posting this. If so, mods, please advise accordingly so I can 'do the right thing'.

I'm posting to inquire if there would be any interest in an advanced first aid course. This is not your average band-aid and Neosporin class, but a CERTIFICATE LEVEL curriculum taught by a 'rock star' instructor whose bio is below. Chris has recently trained the Lackawanna Ambulance/PD and has a long history with DOD/GOV agencies, so you're learning from the best.

Basically, the question at hand is what to do in the event of a range injury. Though RSOs have some training, it's NOTHING compared to this.

The Trauma First Response course is a one-day continuing education course that teaches the principles of Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) to non-EMS practitioners, including first responders, police officers, firefighters, rescue personnel and safety officers. It helps them prepare to care for trauma patients while serving as part of a transport team or awaiting a transport provider.

Core topics addressed through lecture and skills stations include:

    • Recognizing and treating life-threatening injuries resulting from gunshot wounds, stabbings, burn and head injuries, falls, and automobile accidents (the kind of stuff that happens in a SHTF scenario)
    • Performing appropriate first-responder-level interventions such as using airway devices, controlling massive bleeding with hemostatic agents, applying a tourniquet and chest seals, and immobilizing patients onto a backboard

Make no mistake, this stuff can save your life, or that of someone you love some day.

When: Please vote as per above
Where: Somewhere along Rt. 80 in the East Stroudsburg / Mt. Pocono area
Cost: $200 per person, includes lunch and refreshments

OTHER COURSES AVAILABLE for those of you who have core certifications and wish to take it to the next level.

    INSTRUCTOR:
Chris Van Houten is a nationally registered critical care paramedic with 20 years of New York City Emergency Medical Service (EMS) experience and serves as Northeast regional (Region 1) faculty for the Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) program, the pre-hospital battlefield medicine course used by all branches of the U.S. military as well as NATO.

He instructs LEFR TECC (Law Enforcement and First Responder Tactical Emergency Casualty Care) courses for local, municipal and federal high-risk law enforcement teams, as well as members of the Department of Defense where part of his obligation as faculty for PHTLS and TCCC is providing oversight, instructor development and training site evaluations.

In addition, he also provides instruction for EMT's and Paramedics, security teams and civilian first aid, including new provider and recertification education. Additional instructor certifications include but are not limited to: EVOC precision and performance driving, NAEMT PHTLS, AMLS, & EMS Safety programs, AHA BCLS, ACLS, PALS, and FEMA general topics instruction. He is also a contracted Wilderness Medicine Instructor.

Currently assisting in the development and delivery of custom tactical and austere medical programs for many law enforcement and EMS agencies in the process of developing a tactical medical response element, in addition to "team medical support" training with occupational health components as well as extended care considerations.

Lastly, he remains an active prehospital clinician in the 911 system.

I would love to do this. I'm BLS and ACLS certified as well but could use additional trauma experience and thoughts on what kind of items to include in a kit.

Regretfully, the response to this has been dismal. We'd need at least 20 to get the class to fly. If we can find any combination of Police/Fire/Ambulance or 'Civvies' to attend, we can make it happen.
