    That, sir, is funny.

Don't know that I'm up to actually trying it, but damn funny...

One of my favorite interactions with a police group was on a trip to PA fro Montreal during the holiday season.

I had just crossed the peace bridge in Ny (Canada /US border) having driven from Montreal in 16 to 18 inches of snow and was now in about 6 inches of the fluffy white junk.

Don't i see a nice bunch of people in the ditch and in that group, a cruiser..

I pull over figuring I can help, from 100 feet away I can see the tires smoking and snow being thrown, that inevitable sound tires make when turning 60 MPH and the car is not moving on ice..

As i walk up to the car that is barely on the shoulder, I see 3 officers pushing and one racing the engine in reverse.

This is when I really appreciated my winter tires compared to regular 4 seasons. I start to talk to one of the officers, ask him if they need help, it was sort of a rhetorical question, the answer was obvious..

I ask the officer driving to stop a moment, go back to my car and come back with a little 1/4 gravel and an aluminium shovel.

Removed a little snow behind the rear wheels add the crushed stone and start to explain to the officers, the more they race the engine, the less they will actually move.

Of the 4 officers, one was much smaller and a lady, I asked her to get in the drivers seat, ask her to place the car in reverse but not touch the gas, then ask the other 3 to join me in front to lean into the car, I show them how to push with their legs by leaning backwards into the hood, then show the lady to open her door and lean backwards into the door post so she is ready to jump in the car once its moving.

Withing 2 minutes, the cruiser was back on the road.
Then, one of the officers tells me "I" will not be able to leave there because it is too dangerous to drive on, their other cruiser is about 1000 feet up the road..

I looked the officer straight in the face, said to him, I had just driven from Montreal to there, no issues, If the road was fairly clear in the center I would be just fine, I was not out to break any speed records in getting to PA but there was no way I would sit there waiting.

I got in my car, a 93 Escort Gt, those little escorts with the 1.8l Miata engines and slowly crawled out of where i had stopped. As i drove by the other cruiser, I saw they where already almost there, so I asked them if they wanted a hand again, One of the officers waved me by and said "We got this, thanks!" and on my way I went..

I don't know how many cars I saw that day in the ditches, but one thing i do know, most of the cars that i saw that where not, had Canadian plates on them.

Any of you guys ever make it to Canada, do yourself a favor, stop by a tire store, ask for a set of "Winter" tires for your car/truck/suv Don't settle for 4 seasons in winter. You can tell our winter tires by the alpine mountain on the sidewall.

The thread is a lot more aggressive and the rubber compound used different, the tire is more flexible. You don't want to drive these too long on hot asphalt as they wear a lot faster, but on snow and Ice, they are a world of difference.

When I was in PA, i had never seen the alpine logo on any "Winter" tires there, and later found out it is because they are in reality 4 season winter.

PS, If you do buy a set of winter radials, be sure to stay in Canada a day or two, produce the tire bill at the border duty free office and get your taxes back!

Here is an interesting link that explains winter tires and why use 4 not just 2

One of the first "upgrades" I did when I got my Jeep was put better tires on it. Mine have the symbol you speak of. Tested them out this past winter in all the snow we got, they did just fine.

Wrangler SilentArmor On-/Off-Road All-Terrain tires are branded with the mountain/snowflake symbol to identify they meet industry severe snow service standards.

This former New Yorker's been driving for almost 30 years, and I can still count on one hand the times I ever had to abandon a vehicle with ordinary all-weather tires on it. Hell, I used to even run around with bald tires in winter when I was young and poor!

Of course, 1/2 the cars I ever owned were Subarus with on-demand 4WD or AWD...
