Preferred shooting glasses
Fairly new gun owner here (pistol), wondering what type of lenses you prefer for shooting glasses. I'd rather get some ballistic lenses than take my chances with my DeWalt safety glasses I use for cutting wood.
So, clear or yellow? I'm planning on practicing on indoor ranges and outdoors as well.
I tried on a pair of yellow/amber and they really seemed to brighten and sharpen everything up, like polarized sunglasses do. So, I'm leaning towards those but wanted to see what the experienced crowd recommends for different applications. Not looking to spend Oakley-type dollars though.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Preferred shooting glasses
I picked up some Swiss Eye from Sierra Trading Post. Unfortunately, they don't have any more on their site. They're nice because you have the three different colored lenses, the prescription insert and they're light and stay on your head.

Re: Preferred shooting glasses
Yellow tend to make the iris close, because of the brightness. That will give you a deeper depth of field,,,,meaning that it's easier to see the front sight. Dark sun glasses tend to reduce the depth of field.

Re: Preferred shooting glasses
That place does have them. I got them from Sierra Trading Post for $30 a pair, I bought three sets because I can't stand scratches on my lenses, that gives me plenty of spares plus I don't have to change lenses, I can just have the three colors on their own frame.
The price in the link is good, the retail price is $120, cheapest I found them elsewhere when I bought mine was $60. If I didn't have them already, I wouldn't hesitate to drop $45 on them. They are really nice with very clear, distortion free lenses. Rubber inserts in the nosepieces and the back of the earpieces, which partially wrap around your head, really holds them tight. I bought another brand which refuse to stay on my head without a strap."A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself"

Check out ESS at Gunner's ally. I have mine a couple of years now and love 'em. I got all four colors. The copper color is extra but woth it if you shoot clays. I also have the wire carrier frames with my perscibtion.

Re: Preferred shooting glasses
I used to wear the cheapy ones you can get from any gun shop. Always yellow. Now that I have to wear glasses, I got prescription safety glasses made with the yellow lenses. Very excellent, but not cheap. But, I can see like I could ten years ago.
Either way, yellow always, but foremost, always wear eyepro.

Re: Preferred shooting glasses
For pistol shooting, I'd opt for any of the (3 set) interchangeable lens shooting glasses.
Clear = for indoors or reduced lighting
Yellow = for outdoors on overcast days.
Grey/Smoke = for outdoors on sunny days.
Yellow lens's are high contrast. They are superior for defining the black on white color of traditional paper targets.Last edited by Hawk; June 28th, 2014 at 09:47 AM.
