Default Peep sight for flintlock muzzle loader

So I have this old gun.
It is a flintlock Hawkens .50cal, made in Italy, imported by Armsport in Miami.
I know very little about its background, but that is not the goal of this thread.

The rifle has basic rear sights, a V-notch. It allow for windage adjustment, but not elevation.

I would like to replace it with something better, maybe ghost ring or peep.
Problem is, I don't even know where to start shopping. Not knowing the actual manufacturer and model is a bit of a detriment too.

The barrel is Octagonal, with a width of 0.40" on the top. The drilled and tapped with two holes, 1.5" on center.

    Any ideas as to sources?

    +1 for TOTW ^

Historically they used "Tang" peep sights to aid in long range accuracy. Here are two that may be adaptable to your rifle.

I hunt with a T\C Hawkens and when the PAGC allowed peep sights I purchased the Lyman RS-57-SML peep sight which simply screwed right onto my T\C.

In doing a little searching I found what appears may be your rifle here: http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/...-loading-rifle (Scroll down just a bit) and if this is your's and your looking for a quality peep and not concerned with period correctness, then the Lyman may be what you want. It's built to handle a lot of banging around in the woods and stay right where it's set. Your rifle appears to be one it would fit, however I can't tell (there is no pic of the tang) if there is a hole drilled for two screws in the tang. No big deal, just drill the hole.

    Just an option.

TOTW sells what seems to be the existing sight. Sounds better the way they describe it. Perhaps I just need more practice with it. Luckily I have lots of time before flintlock season.

Peep from Lyman looks like the way to go if I can't get any better with the existing one.

David, that does appear to be the same model rifle.

The "big" plus of the Lyman is that is blocks the pan flash (right hand shooter) completely from your vision. So, when you shoot that initial flash that can make a lot of shooters flinch....and the shot not go where you want it to.....is now blocked and you just concentrate on the sights.

    FWIW

Looking at the one on TOTW that looks like mine, I figured out mine is not as bad as I thought.

I have remounted it and am going to try and get some more practice with it.
