long,long,long,long 22lr barrel
On a recent stop at a local gun shop I saw a rifle on the rack with a barrel that stood above all others. When I asked, they said I was a CZ 452 LUX in 22lr. They also said that because of the extra long barrel, if you use the new "quiet" ammo, the report is at the level of suppressed firearms. Is this true or just hype? If so this "sounds" like a much better option than the effort of getting a real suppressor. What says you all?????
You don't have enough guns untill you don't know how many you have.

Re: long,long,long,long 22lr barrel
Just guessing on a couple of points....
Extra long barrel gives the propelling gasses time to cool down, which is basically what a suppressor does,
"the new quiet ammo" I'm guessing is subsonic, which translates to no supersonic crack as the bullet traverses the air beyond the muzzle.
Combining the two, it should be quieter than a supersonic High velocity .22LR from any configuration. Not an unreasonable assumption.
As for equaling a suppressed firearm using subsonic ammo... it sounds like a bit of a stretch.Last edited by Bang; May 18th, 2014 at 12:00 PM.

Re: long,long,long,long 22lr barrel
The Ultra Lux has an even longer barrel
I have a 452 and with CCI's Quiet22 it sure is quiet.
Here's a video for you, CCI Quiets vs Subsonics shot with an Ultra Lux

Viewed the video. I have to say there is no mistaking that quiet ammo as a .22firearm having been discharged. I couldn't get away with it in my neighborhood. Not impressed.
If you are going to drop down to 770 fps and sacrifice range and accuracy, may as well buy a quality pellet rifle for 25-yard pest shooting. That I do get away with.

Re: long,long,long,long 22lr barrel
I read somewhere on the net that there is a point of diminishing returns with long barrels on 22lr. Basically boiled down to over a certain length the bullet actually starts to slow down because of the lead drag in the rifling and low volume of propellant.
Don't know if it holds true or not. Just food for thought.www.Steelvalleycasting.com is your new home for coated bullets and custom ammo.

^ that is what I was referring to with gasses cooling down prior to bullet exit.
Wish I was learned enough to extrapolate how many feet of bore would be needed to allow the noise to go away before the projectile plopped out of the muzzle...Last edited by Bang; May 18th, 2014 at 04:20 PM.

Re: long,long,long,long 22lr barrel
The real advantage to the Ultra Lux's barrel is the longer sight radius. Obviously that's a non-issue if you plan to scope it.
The long barrel might also balance better for some folks for off-hand shooting.

Re: long,long,long,long 22lr barrel
Hit the nail on the head.
I have a CZ452 American that's suppressed and the Ultra Lux. There is no point in scoping a Ultra Lux as it negates the purpose of the longer sight radius with a longer barrel. Get the Ultra Lux if you plan on practicing iron sights. Get an American if you plan on getting optics. My feedback thread: http://forum.pafoa.org/feedback-109/219616-rxm.html
