    Default 38 super conversion to 9 X 23 winchester

Has any one taken any 38 super or any other 9 mm and made it into a 9 x 23 winchester ?

If so what kind of paltform was used? (1911 2011 large frame etc.)

What results did you have ?

Was it worth it from a technical standpoint ?

Was it worth it from a " I could do it so i did it" point of view?

Would you recommend this to anyone else?

    Thanks for any replies !

I shoot a .38 Super and ask why would you want to change it? (I know, because you can). The .38 Super has a lot of punch, shoots good and was made by John Browning. If you think you have trouble getting .38 Super ammo, try getting 9x23. I reload for the Super and can get brass at Midway any time I need some. 9x23 is out of stock a lot.

I have a barrel converted from 9mm to 9x23 in a 1911. I also have several .38 Super 1911's. All but one or two of them have been reamed out for 9x23. There is a supposed accuracy hit when shooting .38 Super. I've never noticed it.

I had a Springfield .38 super and it chambered and fired 9x23 with no modification and no signs of excessive pressure. YMMV.

At the Masters pistol match we spent some time with the Win. Rep. When I was joshing him about the new caliber after several years of work and plenty of money we had a .38Super race gun, now they came out with bigger and better. He said that you can use 9x23 in a .38Super but not the other way around. He gave me a box of 9x23 to try. I saw no difference in my Wilson modified Springfield. The advantage is supposed to be a heavier web. The 9x23 brass go into my practice brass pile and reload through the .38Super dies fine. If you want to push the envelope with the case use 9x23 load data as I suspect that there is a slight difference in the capacity. Also the hot loads or factory loads are recommended for a supported chamber.
As with all of the internet info this just my opinion and experience yours may vary.
In conclusion of this book there is in my opinion no great benefit in reaming the Super to 9x23. Your mileage may vary.

I'm pretty sure it's actually the opposite, although many .38Super chambers apparently do chamber 9x23 without modification. I know my reamer is a reamer for reaming .38Super chambers into 9x23 chambers.

That's true, there really is no great benefit, and as I stated above I've read of loss of accuracy when firing .38 Super out of a 9x23 chamber. That said I haven't noticed the accuracy difference, and to me being able to fire either was enough benefit. Of course that is just a personal opinion.

Do not own a 9x23 so I do not know about .38Super in a 9x23. But mixed the 9x23 and .38Super in a magazine as per his instructions. There was no noticeable difference in feeding or recoil.
My reloading books are older and do not list the specs. on the 9x23. Not being argumenative but do you know what the differences are.

    Go here:

    http://www.burnscustom.com/

Look at "all about the 9x23"

Typically, the 9x23 can outperform the .38 super. In a carry gun, some may find that attractive.....the rim of the super has been it's weakness in a high cap mag and has brought about such calibers as the .38 TJ to enhance feeding.

It's a small gain, but some may want that.
