Waterfowl Attacking the Wounded

Not really a hunting topic but it seems most of the animal topics are supposed to go here.

When I was a kid I was wandering around with a friend and we came to a pond. Just at the maximum range of rock was a group of waterfowl. I thought they were ducks but I seem to remember them being geese when we recovered one.

My friend through one rock at a bird away from the group. Probably didn't mean any harm, just expected a splash near the animal and a laugh I would guess. Well, he hit it, and the bird started squawking. The rest of the birds came over and pecked it to death. This took several minutes, and at least one follow-up attack IIRC.

Anybody know what is up with that? Is this normal behavior among waterfowl?

I don't know the answer to your question. All I can do is add a kind of similar incident. I was bow hunting turkeys in spring gobbler season with a bow. Five jakes came into my setup and I arrowed the leader. He went down but was still alive. One of the other jakes started pecking and spurring him. Pretty soon the others joined in. Then then the original thumper started humping the dying bird. After he died they all just left and I got out of my blind, got my trophy and left.

I have a friend that has a place down the shore. This time of year the ducks are laying. The male ducks fly around in groups and gang rape whatever looks like a duck they can get a hold of. Its really quite disgusting. Ducks are nasty. I would shoot the hell out of them just because of the depraved things i see them doing. But I dont... Theres a group of hunters down the street that hammers the hell out of them come duck season.

No one wants to be at the bottom of the pecking order. As soon as one of the birds becomes injured, the rest seize the opportunity to move up the ladder. Since they have bird brains, they don't realize that by killing the injured bird, their status remains the same.
