18 Pa.C.S. § 6106: Firearms not to be carried without a license

(12) A person who has a lawfully issued license to carry a firearm pursuant to section 6109 (relating to licenses) and that said license expired within six months prior to the date of arrest and that the individual is otherwise eligible for renewal of the license.

Note that during this period you technically aren't licensed, instead you fall under an exemption to the licensing requirement for the purpose of PA law relating to concealed carry, carry in a vehicle, carry in Philadelphia, and carry during a state of emergency. It doesn't cover you in federal gun-free school zones.

So, will the sheriff's office renew an LCTF prior to expiration of a current LCTF?

There is nothing in the statutes as to exactly when you can renew. Only that a sheriff must send you a renewal application at least 60 days before the LTCF expiration.

It depends on the sheriff as to how he interprets that as far as when you may renew.

Thanks guys, I just found it and came back here to post the statute, lol. Democrat gun owner, the application my sheriff sent for renewal said he will renew 30 or 60 days prior to expiration (don't remember for sure). I just put it off too long. I need to get in there this week and get it done.

My LTCF expires soon and I'm most likely going to be able to renew in time.

However, I do have some health issues that make it difficult for me to drive to Westchester, I'm in Phoenixville, does the grace period still exist?

I dont know, but I wouldn't worry about it, no sense in making your health worse over a illegal law anyway.
Ive been 3-4 months expired most every time I have to renew.

6 month grace period. However, the feds aren't required to honor it for GFSZA.
