Visiting Ohio...
I'll have the pleasantry of visiting Ohio for a wedding this weekend. Since we don't have a reciprocity agreement, I'm afraid that my travels might end up being of the unarmed variety.
My question is simply, is it legal to unload my weapon and lock it in the trunk? Or would I just be better off making the ~122 mile one way(only about 3 or 4 miles will actually be in Ohio, but that really doesn't much matter as their laws are effective at the border) while leaving my gun at home?

Re: Visiting Ohio...
Unless you are going to be shooting (sanctioned) at the wedding/reception, the groom is your gunsmith or some other exemption, I don't think the interstate transportation clause covers you. However, I honestly have shot at receptions before, but that is another thread.
What ever you you decide, I would keep it to yourself

Safe and discreet sounds about right to me.

I would lock it in the trunk, unloaded and under the spare. As long as you do not give Ohio PD probable cause to search your vehicle, you have nothing to worry about. That’s what I do when I need to go to NJ or MD.

It has to be unloaded and stored separately from the ammo. I have an e-mail from the Ohio AG specifying how to transport firearms without an Ohio license. I am at work now, but when I get home I will forward you the e-mail if you PM me your address.

Re: Visiting Ohio...
I work in Ohio - it is an Open Carry state. No permit required to OC in a vehicle.
Just be aware that the no guns signs carry the weight of law there. Felony charge....

Re: Visiting Ohio...
I'd be careful about that in Ohio. I believe there is a duty notify the officer if you are pulled over.
In addition to the concealed carry prohibitions detailed above, Ohio
has strict laws concerning firearms in a vehicle. If you DO NOT have a
concealed handgun license, you may not transport a loaded handgun in
any manner where it is accessible to anyone inside the vehicle without
leaving the vehicle. If you DO NOT have a license, you may not
transport a firearm in a vehicle unless it is unloaded and carried in one of
the following ways:
*In a closed package, box or case;
*In a compartment that can be reached only by leaving the vehicle;
*In plain sight and secured in a rack or holder made for that purpose;
*In plain sight with the action open or the handgun stripped, or, if the
firearm is of a type in which the action will not stay open or cannot
easily be stripped, in plain sight.
