    Default 870 Wingmaster barrel question

My Father-in-law gave me an older 870 Wingmaster. This is a beautiful shotgun. The barrel that is on it is smooth bore, and he had it cut down to 18.5 inches to use in his patrol car(he is a retire police officer). The barrel is marked for 2 3/4 inch shells or smaller.

I want to turn this into a dedicated deer slug gun. Can I put a replacement rifled barrel in it that is rated for 3 inch shells?

    Thank you for your help.

I've done the same thing, my matte slug barrel looks funny on the blued wingmaster receiver. I'm hunting though, so who cares? When I put the factory blued wingmaster barrel back on it gets its beauty back.

If the receiver is marked MAGNUM you are ok with 3" if the receiver is not marked MAGNUM it is only ment for 2 3/4 or shorter shells. hope this helps

This is a good point, I shoot 2 3/4" slugs.

That is not a good idea. The receiver is designed for 2 3\4'' shells. There may not be enough stroke in the bolt travel to feed and eject shells for one thing.
If you want to shoot 3'' shells, buy another gun.
