Increase part count - increase failure points. While electronics are pretty reliable putting them in a high stress enviroment is difficult. That circuit has to take the recoil shock.
Is there a delay while the unit recognizes the "key".
Batteries die at the wrong time (or leak).
They look like a liability lawers gift.
Plus the above comments on backdoor access.
No, will not ever own one.

Re: Smart pistols - good thing or bad thing?
Worse than bad its stupid! Or as someone once said "it's a great solution for a non-existent problem"!
If the government weinies want proof they are a workable, winning design, let the state and local Police Departments use them to evaluate their effectiveness.

Re: Smart pistols - good thing or bad thing?
Reliable or not...I won't ever own one.
I don't need the government telling me what kind of grips I have to have on my gun. My EDC (or any other of my guns for that matter) will NOT have a GPS, fingerprint scanner and a government permission slip attached to it. If I need to use it then I will use without a question or thought on wether my firearm is gonna work.
I can't believe that this is even a discussion. If the NRA backs it then they can kiss my ass too. When does this stuff end? When can we stop bending over the barrel and taking a long hard one? Somebody said "it's not a bad idea". It's a terrible idea. Plain and simple. Every time we turn around, the government is strong arming us into submission.
They dangle a carrot in front of your face. "We will leave your guns alone if you put this little doo-hicky on it. Don't worry, we won't track your gun or your cell phone. Think of the kids. WE think YOU will be safer this way."
I am not gonna be their punching bag at expense of my family's safety nor my own personal safety over a few idiots in this world.
Fuck that.

Bad.
at the upmost worst case it gets hacked and will not fire, or shorts out sends an electrical pulse and fires off all the rounds in your hand.

Good if you are a gun banner. Bad if you value your 2A rights and reasonably priced firearms.
Politicians are already introducing bills to mandate so-called smart weapons.
Anything RF can be jammed, easily. Anything electronic is inherently buggy and never 100% reliable.

Re: Smart pistols - good thing or bad thing?
Were did you get that idea? Here's what the original WashPo article says
Although National Rifle Association officials did not respond to requests for comment about smart-gun technology, the group fiercely opposes “government mandates that require the use of expensive, unreliable features, such as grips that would read your fingerprints before the gun will fire,” according to the Web site of its lobbying arm, the Institute for Legislative Action. “And NRA recognizes that the ‘smart guns’ issue clearly has the potential to mesh with the anti-gunner’s agenda, opening the door to a ban on all guns that do not possess the government-required technology.”
