    Default Stolen Gun Check

is there a way to get a serial number on a handgun checked without any repercussions? such as a simple "its clean" or "its stolen" answer and thats all? we have a handgun that has been in my family for probably 30 years. its more of a show/nostalgia piece really, but it is functional and in case it have had to be used id like it to be clean. But my grandfather was kind of a sketchy character so im really not sure and would like to get it checked, but am scared of it gettin taken if its stolen (or worse, im not sure what they do). my only option might be putting up in the case as a show piece and never using it.

There is no way to check for us common folks.

LEO's can check certain databases to see if it is listed as stolen.

If it was a legal transfer to you from a parent or grandparent (all involved pa residents) I wouldn't worry one bit especially considering the age.

But if it was stolen don't you think it should be returned to its owner?

+rep sent for beating me to it!

A stolen gun may be in your possession. Quick! What is the 'right thing ' to do? What do you want done if it was stolen from your dear departed Grandfather?

Sure, you could shut up and not ever get caught. But I suspect you still have a streak of common decency in you that is clinging to life since you came here and asked the question. Think about this. How good would it feel to hand that gun to a woman whose husband was so proud the day he bought it, after saving money for a few years to be able to afford it. Her husband, long gone, few tangible memories left of him, and certainly few that she can hand to his grandson. You have an opportunity to do something outrageously different here :the RIGHT thing! I bet if you do it, your outlook on things gets brighter, and Life has a way of paying interest on 'doing the right thing'.

Or, keep it and forever know you could have done something besides watch it rust.
