Altoona area mosin head space guage.

Anybody in the Altoona area have a set of 7.62x54R headspace guages I could rent? Need to check 3 Mosins.

An old Military gauge was to put one (1) layer of masking tape on the head ,If the bolt closed it was ok.
Place two(2) layers of masking tape on the case head and the bolt should not close or if it did with a fair amount of pressure. this was Maximum.
Bolt closing on three layers of tape and it was sent back for rebuild.

I spoke with a gunsmith I know about checking headspace with masking tape. He said he does it. It's impractical to have all gauges for all calibers.

Look up rifle chamber reamer rentals on the net. There are a couple outfits that rent reamers (I have used them) and I think they rent gauges also. I have used shim stock instead of tape. A Russian is a rimmed case, so it is not like you are measuring much anyway. I would go with the tape or shim stock instead of wasting the money renting gauges.

I occasionally spend time in Ebensburg, but there are a couple problems with that. I only have a field gauge, and I don't know when the next time I will be out in that area. Not sure on your time frame, but if you are going to be in the lower bucks county area for any reason with your mosins, I can check them with/for you with the field gauge. Let me know.
