Some teens reportedly arrested, one Tased; investigation ongoing
By GARY PULEO, Times Herald Staff

PLYMOUTH — It was a classic case of a post-prom party gone wild.

When an estimated crowd of 400 students became involved in a disturbance, it took police officers from five departments to restore calm to Doubletree Guest Suites across from Plymouth Meeting Mall early Saturday morning.

    Not once, but twice.

“About 1 o’clock Saturday morning, Plymouth Township police responded to a large disturbance at Doubletree Guest Suites hotel,” said Plymouth Township Police Department Sgt. Jeff O’Brien.

“Upon arriving officers observed a large crowd of people, which they estimated to be a few hundred, both inside the hotel, outside in the parking lot, inside the lobby and hanging out in an open floor area.”

The majority of people involved are believed to be Norristown Area High School students or those who attended the school’s prom Friday evening.

Several of them had rented out hotel rooms at the Doubletree for a post-prom-type party, a report indicated.

“After the prom, about 50 rooms were rented out,” O’Brien said. “We’re talking about six or eight kids in each room, so the numbers can add up quickly.”

Officers estimated that about 400 students were at the hotel and participating in various activities, including disorderly conduct, fighting and cheering on the violence as spectators.

“Officers identified some of the people they believed to be involved in the actual physical fighting, the primary people causing the disruption and they go to affect some arrests,” O’Brien explained.

While officers were making arrests, other students tried to interfere and would not back off, he reported.

“One of the people, who was estimated to be about 6’3’’ and 280 pounds, had to be Tased.”

Officers were forced to call in assistance from Whitemarsh, East Norriton, Whitpain and Norristown police departments.

“When you have five or six guys on duty dealing with 400 people either cheering on a fight or involved in a disturbance, obviously it’s not quite enough,” O’Brien said.

After officers had restored calm, another fight broke out about an hour later, with Plymouth, Whitemarsh and Whitpain police officers returning to the scene.

“Three people were arrested and the investigation is (continuing).”

Officers and a K-9 unit remained in the area throughout the night, O’Brien said.

Students’ names are being withheld as charges ranging from public disturbance, assault, resisting arrest and drug offenses are being investigated.
