This. As others said contact the seller with a wtf? And return as quietly as possible. Unless the guy is like "hey, keep it no biggie" or "can you so me a favor and toss that somewhere".. Then cops would be contacted.

As GL already pointed out, it's not an illegal interstate transfer on the part of the recipient because he played no active role in acquiring the firearm from out of state. The actual Federal law specifically specifies:
any firearm purchased or otherwise obtained by such person outside that State
Nor would it be an illegal transfer on the part of the original owner since he had no intention of shipping the firearm in the first place – he is lacking the "mens rea" required for assigning culpability.

As to being in possession of it, most states have a statute regarding retaining possession of "mislaid" property. I was unable to locate any statute for Ohio specific to "mislaid" property similar to PA's §3924 but it may fall within the general application of the theft statute [2913.02 Theft]. Retention by the recipient might also be considered illegal "conversion".

Shipping it back to the original owner would be problematic.

What gun? I only received a nice pair of shoes.....hmmm? How do you forget about a hidden gun? Maybe the seller had them hidden everywhere? I know a few people like that.

I’d imagine a bunch of people standing around looking at a desk drawer containing the gun, astonished that after 7 years with the “safety” disengaged the gun STILL has not “gone off”
