    Default Lead Core 7.62x54R Surplus?

I'm looking for some 7.62x54R that isn't steel core (not permitted at my range). Obviously there is new manufacture, but I'm looking to pay surplus prices. Anyone have a line on a can of surplus lead core? I've had no luck so far with my internet searches.

    Thanks!

    Grafs.com has some.

    http://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/...roductId/25120
    MIL-SURP AMMO 7.62x54R 182g FMJ XMATCH 20/b 12/c
This is the Soviet made 7.62x54R cartridge. Loaded in 1971, using match-grade extruded powder and have a 182 gr boat-tailed FMJ copper-plated steel-jacketed projectile with a lead core. Loaded by “Factory 188”, the cartridges are head-stamped with the number “188” and the year of manufacture. They are packaged 20 rounds to a paper box, 12 boxes per metal tin, and two tins per wooden case. Berdan primed cases. This is loaded ammunition.

Sometimes the guys with the magnet go too far, not understanding that a thin mild steel jacketing does not an armor-piercing make.

Thanks for the reply. What I'm really looking for though is surplus with prices comparable to the super cheap steel core - i.e. ~$0.20/round

I agree. And honestly I wouldn't be "caught" at my range because they arent watching you with magnets, I just know steel core is against the rules and I wouldn't want to damage the backstop. I have no problem shooting HXP 30-06 which is steel jacketed, but most of the surplus 7.62x54r is legitimate steel core.

Take what you can find. You probably won't find anything besides that.

Only surplus lead core I know of is the albainian, which hasn't been imported in decade, and some of it is steel core.

The age of buying on the cheap is over. You may find a deal here and there. But overall you buy what you can find and be happy with it.

So what are the backstops made of that a steel core bullet would damage?
Most backstops I've ever seen (outdoors) are earthen.
