    Default cleaning barrel surface rust

    Hi all,

Would using #0000 steel wool & Hoppes #9 remove surface rust inside a shotgun barrel WITHOUT harming the barrel itself?

    Other suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!

How bad is it pitted or rusted?

not bad at all, really. The edges of the barrel are looking great and the bore light shows the center parts reflect a mirror like shine.

Have been running patches through and still come out with brown/rust like coloration on patch... must be up to 75 or 100 patches now.

It has been well maintained so I assume where it was stored was not good at all. Other shotguns in different location are similarly maintained and do not show this brown/rust coloration when cleaned.

Brass brush just doesn't seem enough to get the job done. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks!

Wrap some 0000 steel wool around your brass brush and use gun oil on it. You want a tight fit but not too tight. If that does not work put the bbl in a padded vise and run the rod slowly thru the gun with your electric drill. Should work well. I just did a 1956 made 870 that suffered years of neglect. it looks mint inside now.

Guessing you don't have some old slugs lying around? The force of the slugs going down the barrel should do the job pretty quickly. Clean, oil very well, and you should be fine.

    They are pretty good.

    That should work well also.

The method that Old Shooter gives above is what most any gunsmith would use. .. Good advise

There are recipes for a DIY gun cleaner called "Eds Red" on the net. Its great for projects like this.
