The Philadelphia Inquirer
An off-duty Philadelphia police officer shot and critically wounded a man who had been reported behaving "in a frightening way" last night in a Northeast Philadelphia neighborhood, police said.
Shortly after 8 p.m., a resident in the 1500 block of Lardner Street, in the Oxford Circle section, called a neighbor who is a member of the police department.
He told the officer that he was scared of the man, who had been trying to crawl into bushes in front of the caller's home and had also been standing out in the road blocking traffic, said Lt. Frank Vanore, a police spokesman.
The officer "came to his neighbor's aid. The man tried to attack him, [the officer]," Vanore said. "He began chasing the officer around a car."
The officer shot the man in a shoulder and leg. He was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center where he was in "critical but stable condition," Vanore said. He declined to identify the officer or the man who was shot.
Vanore said Northeast Division detectives investigated at the scene. So did members of the Internal Affairs unit, which reviews shootings involving police.
The officer who shot the man has been assigned to desk duty pending the outcome of the investigation, Vanore said.

Re: Philadelphia Police Shoot 'Out of control' Man
Was the man armed, r just behaving a little of the deep end. I am sure he had no gun or the paper would have made sure to convey the fact that the shot-ee had a gun, those dirty evil things!!! This one sounds a bit fishy to me, if the guy was so scared why did he not just call the on duty police?? Something to me just does not add up. It is funny how no one in Philly wants a gun around but when trouble brews they will call someone they know who does own and carry firearms. Sheeple at their finest. So the guy was probably jacked up on "Cherm" or PCP and was chasing the off duty officer, why was there a need for the discharge of his gun? When it is a gun violent crime the papers will go into so much detail you know the BG's underwear size, even if it is still under investigation. A LEO shoots a person and it is like yeah "One of our officers shot a guy." and that is all we hear.
When injustice becomes law, rebellion becomes duty!

Re: Philadelphia Police Shoot 'Out of control' Man
I hope the man was armed in some way.
Curious as to why he didn't pull out his ASP and crack him. I'm sure shooting an unarmed man isn't part of their force continuum policy.
Awaiting some more details....

I agree the story sounds a little out of kilter. The off duty cop should have told his neighbor to call 911.
In my opinion, the off duty cop showed a decided lack of common sense.

The guy came over maybe thinking that the fellow was a bit off and could just tell him to leave. He goes over, tells the guy to get lost and the guy chases after him. He is armed, he draws and tells the guy to back off, the guy pursues, he gets shot. I am as critical of the police as the next guy, but I do not have all that many issues with this. Armed or not, you draw and he pursues and does not stop, I would have done the same thing.

Re: Philadelphia Police Shoot 'Out of control' Man
Since LEO was involved the report focused on an out of control man...had he been shot by a civilian the focus would have been on the Gun Nut shooting an unarmed guy in need of care...gotta love the msm...

Re: Philadelphia Police Shoot 'Out of control' Man
Pure conjecture follows:
"Hey, Officer Billy Joe Jim Bob, I know you are having dinner but there is some guy in my bushes scaring me. Can you come check him out?"
"Sure thing, Scaredycat Sally, I'll be right over." "I'll be right back, honey, Scaredy is seeing the boogy man again. Yeah, I'll take my gun just in case."
A few minutes later:
"Holy crap, this drugged up nutball is kicking my ass... oh crap here he comes again... I think this guy is gonna break my neck!!!"
POP POP POP!!!
End conjecture.
There are zero details in that news story. My version of a cop trying to be a good guy is as good as any other story until/unless the facts are brought out."Never give up, never surrender!" Commander Peter Quincy Taggart
