its called politics, and it is done all the time,
now the next time she gives a speech at a "moms against" fund raising event, she can say how many bills she has proposed to curb gun violence and protect the children, then they will all write her big fat donation checks,
doesn't matter that the bill has zero chance of ever passing, or even being considered,
    a road randomly traveled

I hope she has some smart peers that realize this would open the state up to liability in the case of identity theft. I'd be naming her personally in the case.

Lets publish the SSN of anyone who has been a felon, on welfare and that is a good start. Bet the progressive don't want that!

    http://www.ehow.com/about_6499517_social-security-number-protection-law.html

"These records, which include social security number, name and address would be “open to public inspection at any time to persons desiring to see it.”

Intended Purpose of Social Security Numbers

The SSN was created to manage social security benefits and to maintain work and retirement records. It was never intended to serve as identity. Federal agencies, such as the Internal Revenue Service and the Civil Service Commission, first began to use the number as an identifier in 1961. This led to widespread use of the number as an identifier.

    Federal Laws and Amendments

The federal government passed several laws to respond to SSN privacy issues. The Privacy Act of 1974 prohibits denial of federally funded benefits to persons refusing to disclose their SSN and requires that government agencies tell consumers if provision of the SSN is voluntary or mandatory and how the number will be used.

The Social Security Confidentiality Act of 2000 prohibits display of the SSN through window envelopes, Amendments allow use of the SSN to receive federally funded benefits such as food stamps.

Legislation in 1972 authorized the issuance of social security numbers to children starting school and the Family Support Act of 1998 allows use of the SSN for child support. Complaints about violation of the laws can be made through the Social Security Administration.

    State Privacy Laws

Although federal law protects the privacy of social security numbers, many states have created privacy laws to respond to the misuse of social security numbers and the growing threat of identity theft. For instance, the state of Michigan enacted a social security number privacy law that prohibits certain uses of the numbers of employees, students and others. The law requires the use of the last four digits of the number except in specific circumstances and prohibits transmission of the entire number over the Internet.

    Requesting the SSN

The SSN is requested by employers, local and federal government agencies, financial and credit institutions, credit reporting agencies (CRA), information resellers, education institutions and health-care organizations. Some entities request only the last four digits of a SSN, and others request the entire number but use only the last four digits as an identifier. Social security number privacy laws pertain to government agencies. There is no legal requirement to provide a SSN except in relation to group health insurance and transactions that require notification to the U.S. Customer Identification Program and Internal Revenue Service.

Identity Theft and Other Privacy Issues

The social security number and date of birth is sufficient to steal a person's identity. The SSN is ingrained in American culture as an identifier and is available in many records, making it easy to obtain for illegal purposes. The rise of identify theft is prompting increased efforts to limit the use of the SSN. The privacy of health records, financial information and school records is tied to the SSN. Businesses and other private institutions have access to social security numbers and often share the numbers with others. Recent research and policy activity concerns Internet safety.

    Privacy Solutions

State and federal legislation limits use of the SSN by limiting the persons authorized to request or view the number or by limiting the records in which the number can appear. The use of the SSN by private businesses is of particular concern, as are the activities of information resellers. Federal laws restrict the use and disclosure of social security numbers and include the SSN in the definition of private information, thereby limiting its use and disclosure. Information covered under these laws includes health records and drivers' records.
