    Default Options Under $400

I've got some Holiday cash that may be diverted to a new gun purchase... And I've been mauling around so many options it's making me a little dizzy.

I need help in the Shotgun category. I've been doing tons of my own searching, but some of you folks have an eye for good deals, so I'm throwing it out there if you have anything bookmarked you'd like to share.

    My wishlist (IF POSSIBLE):

    -Price under or around $400.00
-7 or 8 shot capacity (this is a pretty big one for me)
    -18.5'' barrel

I typically prefer the the original stock vs. the pistol grip style, but would be happy with either if the other options were right. I'm guessing with this wishlist I would end up with a Mossberg which is fine by me because I think they make an excellent shotgun.

    Any suggestions?

    Not a 18.5" but a 20". I don't think you'll get a factory 7 or 8 capacity with that length.
The tube would extend past the barrel.

Here you go though with money left over.

See if a local dealer will order it for you before ordering it somewhere online and having it shipped + transferred, they are common enough that it shouldn't take long to get from a distributor and you won't have to pay the transfer fee.

    +1 on the Mossberg Persuader.

You're not going to find a factory shotgun that is 7+1 (2.75") with an 18" barrel.

I bought my persuader with the pistol grip stock. I quickly changed it out for an ATI pistol grip/M4 style stock.

With the Mossberg if you stay with the 20" barrel and 7 shot tube you will be limited on barrel choices down the road. Most of the Mossberg barrels are for the 5 shot tube.

    I recently got this:

I wish I could say I was perfectly happy with it, but it did not fire because of a faulty firing pin. However Mossberg is fixing it on their dime and paid shipping both ways. I may have got the one dud but the 500 has to good of a reputation to shy away from it.

Find a used 870 (2 3/4 inch) and put on an extended mag. Should be easy to get for well under $400. Putting on an extended mag is not trivial though and you need to search what it does for reliability. There is a sticky here somewhere about removing the crimped on dimples. Like someone else said the barrel needs to be 20 inches. Do you really need one? The standard 870 mag holds 4 + one in the chamber. Do you really need more than 5 shots? My option is to have a loaded bandoleer next to my shotgun.

Good call omitting the pistol grip. They look great in movies (for carrying under a black trenchcoat) but in reality they are not that practical. Especially for home defense.

I tried firing a friends pistol grip and just could not find any way to make it work. Outside of a dedicated breaching shotgun I don't see any real use for them.

Now a rifle style stock with a pistol grip may be useful for an HD shotgun.

    That's my preference.

Ugly as they may be, the Choate PG stock is rock-solid and comfortable, with spacers that allow for different LOP.

you can get an 870 express "tactical home defense" for ~345. that would be my pick. standard stock, extended mag, 18 inches, smoother (imo) than a mossberg.
