My live shootout experience was in Vietnam, and an entire bandolier of M16 loaded magazines wasn't enough.

Like most it would depend on the carry piece and the situation.

Normal carry situation is one gun:
Glock 17 I carry one spare for a total of 39 rounds (19rd mags)
    Sig P220 I carry 2 spares for a total of 30 rounds (10rd mags)
    Beretta M9 I carry 1 spare for a total of 41 rounds (20rd Mags)

    235 work is 2 gun:
4 extras for primary and 2 for secondary

    Hairy situations:
    3 Extra mags

I use a few different methods of carrying mags, I have a few IWb, OWB carriers in kydex, leather, Nylon depending on what i am wearing. I also have thrown it in my pocket, Jeans or shorts.

In the truck I have 100 rds of 9mm and .45 in boxes for reloads if needed.

I always carry 1 extra mag no matter which gun I carry in case of malfunction/failure. Not worried about the amount of rounds. I have seen too many malfunctions in all brands over the years to depend on just one mag to feed my gun. Of course I keep the mags serviced but they are the weak link.
Also during an attempt at clearing a bad stoppage, Like a double feed, you could drop loose the original (only mag) and end up SOL.
