Mossberg 500 firing pin question.
So I took my brand new Mossberg 500 out to the range for the first time.
Pulled the trigger "click". Ok maybe I got a bad factory shell, pumped the action to chamber another shell and "click"
Pick those two shells up and there is ZERO primer strike.
I field strip the shotgun and take the bolt out. By pushing the bolt with the rear of the firing pin against the table, I push it down until the rear of the bolt is flush with the table and the firing pin does not protrude past the breech face.
Given how hard the spring is I doubt that the hammer should have to push the firing pin farther in than that but I could be wrong.
When the firing pin is being held back by the spring is is recessed almost 3mm into the bolt from the bolt face.
Mossberg customer service is not open now. So I figured id summon the collective intelligence at PAFOA to at least confirm my diagnosis of a broke firing pin.
Yes the shotgun had been cleaned before I went to the range.Last edited by QuackXP; December 8th, 2013 at 04:07 PM.

Re: Mossberg 500 firing pin question.
I think you may be having the same problem I had with my 600. It has a spring and a washer inside the bolt assembly for the firing pin but for some reason the washer restricts the firing pin too much and doesn't allow it to protrude out far enough to strike the primer. remove the washer and everything should work as new.

Re: Mossberg 500 firing pin question.
Sorry, I wasn't any help Sunday.
The amount of pressure it took to depress the firing pin seems excessive. And as I mentioned, I would think that full depression of the firing pin should have extended the firing pin out of the bolt face (which it didn't). I'm not sure if that is by design. It may only protrude under inertia.
If you want, I will disassemble my 500 tonight and see how it functions as compared to yours. I'm curious now.
Here are a few other people who have had the same issue:

Re: Mossberg 500 firing pin question.
Thanks anyway Hawk.
I contacted Mossberg today and they sent me a shipping label to send it back to them for service. I waited less than a minute on hold, the whole call lasted less than five and I had the shipping label same day. It's already on it's way back.
If you want to check your's, it would be nice to know. But I am betting Mossberg will make it right.Last edited by QuackXP; December 9th, 2013 at 09:18 PM.

Re: Mossberg 500 firing pin question.
Mossberg made it right with the firing pin.
It took about a month round trip with the holiday in the middle to get it back. I went to the range this weekend and it shot fine.
Then when I came home to field strip it the trigger housing would not come out. I had to take the stock off to get it to come out and discovered that the mainspring retaining pin had was halfway out and that is what kept me from removing the trigger housing without removing the stock.
I was able to work the pin in with a punch and hand pressure. It seems to be a little loose so I emailed the Mossberg CS rep that I dealt with the firing pin issue yesterday and haven't gotten any response.
While the shotgun did shoot fine. Having two issues right out of the gates has me concerned. If this was a primary HD gun I would already consider moving on to something else. But I bought this mostly to familiarize myself with shotguns and take a stab at trap shooting and as a backup of a backup for HD.
I'm hoping that if I have continued issues with the mainspring retaining pin its because the pin is to small and Mossberg can just send me a new one vs having to send the trigger housing or the whole shotgun back to Mossberg again."No, it's just a machine. I'm the weapon." - Jack Harper in Oblivion

Re: Mossberg 500 firing pin question.
Every company has a bad egg every now and then, but I'm sure they'll take care of it as well. My 500 was perfect from the start, hardest part was removing the plug from the tube because the o-ring was too close to the end. I wouldn't give up so easily on it just yet, they're fine weapons that do their job well.
