Default Value - Series 70 Colt

I have a chance to buy a 80's production series 70 Colt with original box. Sorry, no pictures. I estimate that finish is 99% with no visible cosmetic blemishes, very low round count (little wear on barrel or mag). Thoughts on a value?

$1200-$1500, but that doesn't mean what you could get for it or even pay for it.

Be very careful buying a Colt of that era. Colt had a lot of QC problems then. I would want to take the pistol apart and see the lug cuts in the slide. You want them to be uniform and square. A lot of 70 series colts will disappoint in this critical area. Another issue, a lot of Colts are in fantastic shape either because they were owned by a collector or because they don't run. You will want to make sure the extractor doesn't have excessive play in the fit with the FP stop (read excessive clocking). I'd also take a careful look at the feed ramp. $1200 is the top of the range for me. That's a lot of money to pay for a pistol that won't run so be cautious.

$700. I paid just over $900 for my Gold Cup Trophy a few years ago, new. I only got it because I wanted at least one Colt. They are still in the high 9's to just over a grand for a new one. I'm not buying an 80's Colt without the FPS for more than $700, but that's just me.

The GCT has a lot of hype for being super accurate, but my PT 1911's were just as accurate, and a couple of them were tight to the point they needed a few cycles to be smooth. They will print smaller groups than the GCT. True story.
BCM and Glock...for a bigger pile of 'cold dead hands' brass.

With Box and in 95%+ in the $700.00-$800.00 range. Maybe a bit more. Some guys are tying to get $1200.00-$1500.00 but they don't sell for that usually.

I believe that. I thought my Gold Cup was top dog, but really hadn't messed with many other 1911s at the time. I was never super happy with the accuracy from it, and ended up getting rid of it. Picked up a Sig 1911 about 6 months ago, and what a difference! Slide doesn't rattle, better fit and finish all around, and it's considerably more accurate. The trigger isn't as nice, but it breaks cleanly, I don't think it would take much work to get it to where my old colt was. Moral of the story is, everyone thinks the colts are best, and maybe they are, with some work. I think for that kind of money I'd pick up a newer 1911, almost all of them, including RIAs have better fit and finish than my 80s Colt did.

    More great input, thanks.

i am thinking of purchasing this as more of a collectable. I a few shooters already. I have a small list of 1911's that I want to gather to grow the family.

    1. GSG (SIG version) 1911 22 - Check
    2. Springfield Loaded SS 9mm - Check
    3. Springfield RO - Check
    4. Springfield TRP - Up Next
    5. Colt - We will see
    6. 1911 45 as a carry piece (commander length)
    7. A WWII carried or at least manufactured 1911 (probably a Rand)
    8. Baer custom…..

I am still learning and researching on the high end (for me) pieces.

Off topic, but any feedback on the ITHICA 1911's?
