Apartment gun safes
I am active duty Army and I stay in apartments. I have not gotten to the point as of right now where it is beneficial to purchase a house and settle down. I am looking for suggestions on ways to store my guns safely in an apartment.
Things I am looking for:
semi-portable for moving
holds no more than 10 pistols and 6-8 rifles/shotguns
ammo storage would be nice also
I have done some quick research into horizontal safes and wooden benches that open into safes. The American Security VA DV652 Under Bed Defense Vault is something I will be purchasing come time for me to move, but I need something more, as that will be just for the AR and a pistol or two.
I am open to suggestions or if you recommend a wood worker that has the know-how to build something that meets my needs.

Re: Apartment gun safes
Personally I would look into a 300 lb "12" gun "safe" from Tractor Supply or a major sporting goods store. Basically every vertical safe that is listed/advertised for a certain amount of long guns realistically holds half of that. A safe this size is easy to move with a standard dolly. Bolt it to the floor in a closet and you probably won't lose your security deposit, because most property managers do not look for holes in the floor of your closet.
Not the best security, but easy to move with a basic hand truck.
NOTE: If you buy a safe from Dick's, don't tell anyone here.

Re: Apartment gun safes
Good thinking. I have been browsing sites looking for the budget vertical safes and just exactly how many guns it truly does hold.

Re: Apartment gun safes
I have a Liberty 24 gun from Lowes. ~$550, and you'll get another 10% for military discount.
The nice thing about it is that since it has external hinges the door can come off whenever it's opened, making moving it a lot easier.

Tractor Supply also has a nice Winchester 24 gun on sale for the same price as my liberty. It's silver (Liberty is black) and has a keypad instead of a dial lock. Has a little better fire rating and is such a little bit heavier.Last edited by pittim; November 30th, 2013 at 02:52 PM.

Re: Apartment gun safes
I'm at the other end -- nearing retirement. I own a home with plenty of space now, but I'm likely to be moving a couple of times and downsizing over the next few years. I'm taking a really hard look at these safes. A conventional safe would be less expensive and perhaps a bit more secure, but the advantages of a modular design make them a very attractive alternative.

Re: Apartment gun safes
We have one of these:
http://www.dunhamssports.com/product...i-24-gun-safe/
It will hold 6-8 long guns on one side, thousands of round of ammo on the other, and still have two top shelves for handguns/ mags/ ammo.
I put a bunch of these on the door for pistol/ handgun mag storage:
http://www.amazon.com/Hazard-Stick-u...ro+gun+holster
and
http://www.amazon.com/Maxpedition-Th...magazine+pouch
We did get to the point we had just too many long guns for that configuration (long guns on one side, ammo on the other), so we just bought a stack on 18 gun cabinet we use for ammo storage only, and changed the setup of the original safe to just hold long guns on both sides, pistols on the door, and some ammo/ mags on the top two shelves.

I can probably take some pictures if that would help you out. There is a smaller version of that safe as well, I think.
EDIT:
I am sure this is not the best/ most efficient/ lightest solution, but it does work for us.Last edited by SirStefan32; November 30th, 2013 at 07:44 PM.

Re: Apartment gun safes
I have a vertical Winchester with the old fashioned combination lock.
It can hold 6-8 rifles. Handguns on the upper shelf in racks. Weighs about 300 lbs. Can be bolted to the floor or wall.

Re: Apartment gun safes
I realize that youre looking for something more portable but based on comparable prices, I think this Costco Big Horn is a good deal.
Its advertised as a 24 gun safe (but thats not realistic) and although its on the heavy side (a solid 435 pounds), for $600, its delivered to your door and IMHO is a good balance between storage and space efficiency.
