too old
at what point would you consider retiring your carry piece to the safe ?reliability issues are a given, what I mean is what's considered too old for a carry pistol. no flinlock jokes either.I carry a S&W model 39-2

Re: too old
One of my carry guns is a S&W 59 which is from the same time period as your 39. Unless the age has generated a collector value I see no reason to retire the piece unless it is due to reliability, ammo availability, or shortage of replacement parts.

Re: too old
There's probably some old boy in Arizona or New Mexico still carrying his great grandfather's 1873 SSA in 44-40. They don't care too much as long as it goes bang when they pull the trigger. I may be too old to cut the mustard, but I can still remember how to lick the jar!

Re: too old
If you're concerned, respring it and you're good for another hundred thousand miles, as long as the barrel and frame still fit decently.
BCM and Glock...for a bigger pile of 'cold dead hands' brass.

Re: too old
Yea it really isn't about age, it is about condition. If you had a 100 year old revolver with tight lockup and proper function, there is no reason it wouldn't work for self defense.

With proper maintenance, you probably wont live long enough to wear most modern or well made guns out. There are 1911's from WWII that run and Glocks that have had 200,000 rounds through them that still work just fine. Shoot it till it falls apart, with a quality gun you won't most likely see that happen without going broke buying ammo.

Re: too old
The "old lady" carries a '43 Union Switch & Signal M1911A1 & I have been known on occasion to carry my '47 Hi Power or Detonics Combat Master when giving my Delta a much needed rest from EDC.
The oracle is in. Age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill!!

Re: too old
I have a Ballerina-Mollester, I don't carry it but I wouldn't hesitate to do so. Very reliable and incredibly accurate. My regular carry gun is from 1962.
The key really isn't age, it is condition. If you shoot 2,000 rounds a week, a brand new Beretta 92 could be shot to pieces in a couple years.
