To me a part of liberty is personal responsibility and respect for other people's body and property. And that to me is why we have certain laws and a government, to keep other citizens from unduly imposing on another person under duress or to provide a legal remedy, punishment or settlement after the fact.
So if you are someone that committed a "violent" felony or similar such crime, why should the other law abiding citizens make it easy for you to continue to impose on your fellow man or in the future?

In absence of a gun, why not keep a bat, a glove and a ball in your vehicle?
Glove can help defend against a knife wielding attacker, and I don't have to say more about the bat. The ball is for show or if you actually decide to play a game.
I don't know if this would fly in NJ so check laws before going out.
