I'm thinking of getting a 14" .223 and then something to use for deer/bear. I already have two .44 Magnum handguns (Super Redhawk and Blackhawk) so I don't think I want a .44 Magnum Contender barrel. Maybe .30/30 or 7-30 Waters.

While my favorite Contender barrel is the 35 Remington, I love the 7-30 Waters and 7mm TCU.
If only ammo was cheap. Wait. I reload. Darn .22 lr.

What is 6x223 and what exactly are we looking at on that barrel?

    Gunsnwater,
6x223 or 6x45 uses a .223 Rem case and expands the neck to accommodate a .243 bullet (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/6%C3%9745mm)
The cartridge is somewhat similar to the 6TCU.
I received this barrel from a machinist that for lack of a clear explanation had removed the front 9" of metal of an SSK Bbl to 0.55" diameter thusly negating the forward mounting dovetail of the 14" barrel.
I can only surmise that perhaps barrel fluting had been attempted and failed aesthetically and an effort at resolution had been made
Being used to seeing my super 14's as bull barrels, I built a 'jacket' of maple to encompass the thin barrel's portion of it's length.
I was allowed only the rear lug of the barrel for which to mount the forearm and judiciously removed any interior material that would contact the barrel, adequately 'free-floating' the forearm.
I now use it for shooting varmints and targets. It's pretty impressive in it's performance albeit unconventional in it's appearance.
    Thanks,
    Jimmy
