    Default Statute about longarms sales?

Buying a rifle off a guy and he said he wants to transfer it in my name. Is there a statute or something I can email him showing that we don't register longarms? Also if we took it to a gun shop what would they do? A bill of sale or something? Seems like a waste of my money.

You're not required do an FFL transfer by law, but I believe that the seller is able to require it if he/she chooses to do so.

ok. I know the store charges 40 if you buy a gun online and transfer through them so I was trying to avoid that.

The whole thing is here, but here is the relevant part to your Q:

    (f) Application of section.--

    (2) The provisions contained in subsections (a) and (c) shall only apply to pistols or revolvers with a barrel length of less than 15 inches, any shotgun with a barrel length of less than 18 inches, any rifle with a barrel length of less than 16 inches or any firearm with an overall length of less than 26 inches.

If he is skittish and wants to prove that he sold it, make up a bill of sale, both sign it, and make copies for each of you.

That's too expensive, find a different shop. $20 is a really good price, >$30 is ridiculous. You can find $20 if you look/ask around.

If he wants an FFL transfer just let him pay for it.

If you don't want the hassle offer a receipt + copy or go somewhere else.

The last several people I have done "business" with have shown me their LTCF - good enough for me.

I think the unwritten rule around here is that the buyer of a handgun pay for transfer, since it is required to complete the sale. But if it's a longarm and you have an LTCF and complete a bill of sale but the seller still insists on a transfer, they should cover the fee.

You don't need to do the paper work for a private long arm sale, as such if i was dealing with this person and had the price negotiated then he tells me he wants to go threw an FFL i would absolutely make him pay for it or subtract it from your cost of the gun.

Well my experience is that I ve had several pirvate people selling long guns to me, they see I'm open carrying a 1911 and have said cash and go. If you can legally carry and have LTCF and can show the id, they don't question. A bill of sale will make most sellers comfortable.
