Please recommend a 9mm carry/self-defense ammo for a G26.

Both my friend (PA resident) and I are in the process of learning.

Have been told that simple FMJ is the wrong option for carry ammo.

One of the main concerns being that the round could penetrate through the intended target and strike someone else.

It can happen with any ammo. You can make it a bit less likely with your choice of ammo. You'd probably do more to protect innocents by making sure you can shoot accurately, and more still if you can avoid firing any rounds at all.

That is a valid concern, especially with 9mm, they have a reputation for over penetration, doubly especially using FMJ.
Your Glock should eat just about anything so there shouldn't need to be any worries about whether the gun can shoot whatever you feed it reliably.
Carry hollow point defensive ammo. There are several good brands and types, just pick one. Your G26 will also shoot +P ammo, which is a high pressure version, without any issues if you want something a little more potent but expect it to kick the little 26 around more than the regular pressure ammo.
My choice in defensive ammo in my G26 is Hornady Critical Defense but there is lots of good defensive ammo out there. To be honest, I carry Hornady because I like the company.
Hit up some ballistics camparision videos on youtube, that should give you an idea what's out there.
Whatever ammo you decide to carry, run enough of it through the gun so that you are comfortable knowing the gun is reliable with it.

Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P JHP or Federal HST 124gr +P JHP would be my recommendation.

Of course there are plenty of other options... stick with JHP from reputable manufacturers though. Shot placement, situational awareness and training are most important!

Has plenty of tests of SD ammo. In 9mm he uses a G19 so the barrel is a bit longer, but I would guess it would give similar results.

I use the Federal HST also.

I think any major manufacturer premium self defense ammo will suffice.
