My first hand gun purchase ~2001 went to research then nothing for two weeks. The gun shop kept calling and they had no status. Turns out it was sitting on the desk of someone that went on vacation for two weeks. All good in the end.

    Currently "in-research"
I asked the FFL owner if this happens often. He said because of covid they've been all over the place. Might come back in an hour might take a few days. I'll keep this updated.

So is this a recurring thing for you? I just at random?

I think the timing had a lot to do with it. The 1st purchase was just before thanksgiving..... and with the rise in gun sales. It’s just so busy lately

Don't mix up "In Research" and "Pending"

"In Research" means that something was flagged and the PICS people have to find out what it was and evaluate it to determine whether to give the "Approved", "Denied" or "Undetermined" status. If Denied or Undetermined, then the buyer needs to fill out the challenge form (as quickly as possible, you only have 30 days to challenge) to have a more thorough check done.

"Pending" means that your check was sent to a PICS operator to look it over before anything is determined. The system also randomly picks checks to be looked at by a PICS operator as a quality control measure. Pending can take minutes up to 4 hours just depends on how many have to be done. The Pendings go into a queue and it's "first in-first out". I've had checks for people go "Pending" and take 5 minutes and I've had them take 4 hours (rarer now, not rare in the May-August 2020 time frame).

Here's a question. I listed a winchester 94, found an out of state buyer. I was going to ship it to his dealer. Since I'm "in research" does anyone foresee any problem with transferring it out to someone else?
I know that a copy of my DL needs to be included in the box so I wasn't sure of FFL's processed that.

If your buyer fails the background check, you aren't getting it back until you clear PICS yourself.
