To the OP:

10 or 12 yrs ago I was denied purchase of a rifle. First ever, and it was a denial. Filled out the challenge form, heard from the PICS investigator within two weeks who asked me to write a letter stating name, address, DOB, POB, and other info that's asked for on a 4473. A week later I get my reversal letter with number. I called the investigator and he told me that the day I attempted purchase, a person with my exact same F,M,L names was involuntarily placed in an institution "in the Lehigh Valley" and that info was entered into the PICS DB the day I attempted purchase. When that happens, the system auto-denies everyone with that same F,M,L name combination until an investigator applies that info to the appropriate individual's records and lifts the "auto-denial." In my case at the time, he said there were 11 other PA residents with the same F,M,L name combo as mine, and had any of us attempted purchase that day, we would have been denied "probably for 24 to 48 hrs or so." As it happened, I attempted purchase at a different dealer the day after denial (because I knew I had NO prohibiting issues to my knowledge) and was approved! I am NOT recommending anyone do that, but it does uphold what the investigator told me - the "auto-denial" was lifted in less than 24 hrs.

Went to AFBoyer to buy a rifle on Feb. 26, I got placed in the "research" catagory, I don't know what the issue is, have made purchases before at other locations and my sherrif granted me a ltcf. So I walked out thinking no big deal, just wait out the 15 days. Well today is March 20th and still no reply to AF Boyer from pics. Is it me or is this just crazy? Anyone else have any experience with a time frame like this?

The first time I was in pics research it lasted the entire 15 days and remember it Business days .
The second time I was in research it was 3 days ,

I believe that it is treated as business though it is technically consecutive.

Placed into research this past monday, I was told by the FFL I can languish in research for 30 days? Is it 15 or is it 30? Doing some internet sleuthing, while nothing is crystal clear, after 15 days one can enter a undetermined status but what does that mean?
Last question if anyone knows, Can you call the PICS unit for more information?
