    Default 1903-a3 Springfield

What can you guys tell me about them. I just took one in trade that is in excellent condition. The serial number is 348####. It appear le to be fired very little and the parkerizing is 99% thee and good. I don't know that much about them so I need info...whatcha got?

I do know it was made in 1942 so the heat treatment was good and well as nickel steel. But other than its a 30.06 I'm blank.

    it's a Remington

Is it a Springfield, Remington, Smith & Corona? I don't know much either but I had a real nice smith & corona 03-a3 that I got rid of. I don't like to collect rifles that any more bc I'd rather have functional modern arms, but man oh man was she lovely. Still kick myself.

    Don't know much particular,
BUT it is my favorite gun -I bought a beat up sporterized one 20 years ago, the guy said "I don't know nuthin 'bout minute of angle, but it'll pop 2 liter soda bottles at 200 yards" Damn if it won't do that free-hand with a sling ! Good caliber, long reach and heavy punch. I love the switch that allows you to load a single round while keeping your magazine loaded .
If you don't want her, call me !!

There is no F-ing way I'm selling this gun ever! I don't think this one saw any battle, the bore is perfect and the wood other than needing a good cleaning with some Balistol and elbow grease doesn't have a single mark in it and like I said the park is damn near perfect too...

I know military loads were around 150gr how do these perform with other bullet weights?

As with any rifle, it will like some better than others but it will probably shoot anything well. When the '03 was issued ammo was 172 grain and was decreased later, should handle heavy bullets just fine. '42 vintage so I'm going to guess it's 4 groove as I don't think Remington used 2 groove barrels until 43. There should be a date on the top of the barrel behind the front sight. Most '03s and '03a3s were rearsenaled at some point. Are there markings on the stock? Check out the first link I gave, it will tell you a lot.

The early M1903A3's didn't have the issue with the heat treatment on the receivers, it was the early M1903's. Without pics I can't tell you much more about your particular rifle. It could be original or it could be a rebuild with a re-park and replacement stock. Are there any cartouches on the stock? What's the date on the barrel? Is the bore bright and shinny or dark? Many M1903A3's ended up as parade rifles and corrosive blanks were used and the bore never cleaned, which turn's the bore black. Check the crown. Check the muzzle and throat for wear. You'll need a throat wear gauge and muzzle wear gauge to do this correctly. Inspect all the parts to verify they are of the same manufacturer. All the major components are stamped with manufacturer ID.

This page will help you with the cartouches: http://www.trfindley.com/pgsnstmps03.html

This page will help you ID the date of MFG: http://www.vishooter.net/ra_serialization.txt

In pretty decent condition and all original they go for $600-$700.

The barrel says 2-43 up by the sight. I'm almost 100% the barrel is no 2 groove

Bore is bright and shiny, no cartouches anywhere. I had the whole rifle apart last night and the parts all match

you got yourself a nice rifle there my Friend. The serial number sounds about right in that it has a 1942 vintage. Great rifle with excellent accuracy, what type of rear site does it have ?
