H&R 922 inquiry

I inherited an H&R 922 from my deceased stepfather. I know the pistol was owned buy his uncle, and was handed down to him. I am just looking for a history of this pistol, other owners etc. The serial number is M1239. Any information will be greatly appreciated. How would I go about registering it, I'm not sure if it was ever registered to my stepdad.

The "M" in the serial number means 1952.

There is no registration in PA. There is a record of sale, but if you were named to receive that firearm in your stepfather's will you are under no legal requirement to have the firearm "properly transferred" to you.

If your stepfather legally adopted you - then you could also legally receive the firearm via intestate succession(family inheritance), without paperwork.

If you received the firearm in the liquidation of his estate, but not from being named in the will or you were not a legal heir - then the executor of the estate should take the gun to a FFL or the county sheriff to perform a lawful transfer to you. If you were the executor and not named in the will to receive it or not legal family, then you would have to take the gun to a FFL or sheriff to have it transferred to yourself.

If your mother, assuming they were still married at the time of your stepfather's passing, received the gun as her portion of the estate(first $**K of value and 50% thereafter), and passed it down to you - no transfer paperwork is required.

That one I may need pictures for..

Prior to 1940, when H&R put "D" at the beginning of the serial's when it was a double action("S" for single action).

But more than likely with the 922, the D probably means 1943. I don't think H&R did the pre-1940 D/S thing with the 922's. ...so, if I were a betting man, I would put my money with yours being 1943 production.

Enjoy your 922 - nice gun - it was the first one my Dad and I shot together when I was a kid. I still enjoy mine and all my other H&R pistols. H&R was originally from Worcester, Mass about 30 miles from my house Have fun with them!
