    Default Giving handgun to Niece

My niece is graduating from the Naval Acedamy this month, commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the Marine Corps. I would like to give her a 1911 as a graduation gift. Question, if I purchase it myself and give it to her as a gift, what are the legal necessities, if any, that need to be taken care of?
    Thanks, Shooter 45

It must be transfered through either the Sheriff's office or a FFL(Federal Firearms Licensed dealer).

First, tell your niece "Semper Fi" from a former active duty Marine.

The transfer must go through a FFL. So your choices are to buy the gun and present it to her, which would be quite a gesture. Then take her to the FFL and transfer it to her.

The other option is to maybe give your niece a gift certificate for the firearm. This is pretty much what a group of fellow workers did for my years ago on my 30th birthday. I ended up with a Beretta 92FS

The transfer must take place via a FFL of her home state.

If there is time and money it would be nice to engrave it with her name and the Globe and Anchor.

Thats a great gesture and thank her from all of us for her service.

What you may want to do is contact whoever is selling the 1911 that you want to buy for her and have it shipped to her FFL and have her pick it up from there directly, she'll do all the paperwork and your name isn't associated with it.

btw - I'm not sure but depending on where she is going after she graduates she may not be permitted to have her own firearm with her? I'm not sure what the Marines rules are about having personal weapon in barracks or on base? I'm sure someone on here could give more info on it as needed.

or..., you could give it to your dad, who could give it to her dad, who could give it to her. but no, that would be like driving through a gas station to avoid a red light, wouldn't it?
