please help with rust prevention in gun safes

having recently read an article describing someones new purchase of a rifle complete with rust on the butt plate from being stored upright on carpet in a closet, i checked my gun safe (in which all my rifles stand upright on carpet) and my beloved persian mauser had rust on the butt plate!

How do i Prevent this?!

Another cheap alternative is silica gel.... you can get it at most hardware stores.... its the stuff in the little packets that look like sugar packets.... I have some in my gun cabinet and have NEVER had a problem with rust.....
