    Weatherby series 2 stainless 670. Nikon monarch 3x9x40 350 with discount going on right now. Talley light weight 1 piece rings 37. 670+350+37=1057 close enough? Weatherby accuracy, plenty after market stuff. Nikon always good and Talley are the best.

    Here is some irony, this guy just posted his 1K dollar 1k yard rifle project and I think he started with a very good rifle:

    Whatever you decide to do, Savage rifle are of an incredible value. I had a 111 just in .30-06, the recoil was unpleasant with full power loads and still not all that fun with 110 spire points. I don't suppose the .270 will be much different. I shot plenty of MOA groups with it though.

    Companies like Remington? I'm not so confident, they're still making .223s with 1x12 and 1x14 twist rates *rolleyes*

    Are the rifles at Walmart the same as the ones in Cabela's? I don't want to buy some cheap junk that I have to replace is 2-3 years...

    What are the rings/mounts like on the package guns?

    I have two of the new FN made FW rifles, one in .308 and one in 7x57 Mauser.

    The .270 in a FW classic is an excellent rifle / cartridge combo.
    For a rack grade hunting rifle, this would be my first choice (The FN built model 70s).

    A Remington 700 would be my second.

    I'm ordering a Montana Rifle Co XWR-SS for next season in 7mm WSM topped with an SWFA 3-15x42 and calling it a day;

    A bit over the budget you listed, but worth while in the end. Just something to ponder.

    Instead of 270 Win, have you taken a look at 270 WSM?

    What happened to the 7mm-08 idea?

    The 7-08 is still here. This thread is older than the 7-08 one. I'll prolly go off the rack first and see how I do with reloads for it. I already started to collect brass for the 7-08.

    How about a Marlin XL and then put the scope of your choice on to it. You should be well under a grand. I have one and for the price it'll hold 1" - 1 1/2" all day long. I really don't care for synthetic stocks so I put a Boyd's laminated on to it. Mine is in 7mm-08.

    I would personally get a Remington 700 and slowly build it up into a M40 or M24 configuration.

    I have a Rem 700, Winchester Model 70, and a Sako 85 Hunter.

    The Sako Model 85 Hunter is by far the best of the three in craftmanship and detail. The bolt and trigger quality are far beyond the other two and the Hunter series isn't even Sako's top line.

    The only Sako 85s I can find are in the $2000+ range. If you don't mind me asking, how much was yours?
