Lightbulb How is NATO "Green Tip" Legal?

How is NATO green tip legal? From what I've heard true AP ammo is illegal in the US. Is it just that Green Tip does is not nearly effective enough to be considered AP?

Specifically exempted by the atf, as is black tip 30-06 and any manufactured/imported before a certain date (that I cant think of right now).

I believe that AP ammo is only illegal if used in a crime or is specifically prohibited by a state law.

I just went over ammo ID with my National Guard unit. The green tip means it is lead free ball ammo. Black tip means armor piercing.

Green tip is M855 ball ammo. It has a steel penetrator to go through helmets. I've seen it at gun shops so I don't think it's illegal but as already stated give it time.

Just because it has a steel core... doesn't mean it's AP.

Steel is a pretty generic term that could be used to describe VASTLY different materials concerning hardness. The majority of steel in ammunition is mild steel. Which, while harder than lead, isn't even close to the hardness of a hardened steel penetrator used in actual AP ammo.

Kinda like tank ordinance. It doesn't have an explosive projectile as many think. It's a framed depleted uranium penetrator. On impact the frame brakes away as the penetrator continues and penetrates just about anything. In this case it's just in bullet form.

Correct, It's not AP by any means. It is designed to wound, not kill: however it is also designed to penetrate helmets but not vests. Nato has set these strange standards. It's like playing fair while trying to kill each other
