Default Good encounter with a PSP Lieutenant

Was gassing up the war wagon last night in Chippewa when an unmarked PSP Crown Vic drove past me and backed up to the pump in front of me. While we were fueling our vehicles, he called me over.

Lt.- Hey, boss...quick question, why do you open carry?

Me- Shits and giggles. No, really, its more comfortable.

Lt.- Nice. I know its your right, and I fully support open carry. I was just wondering. You're the first person I've seen open carrying around here, but then again, I don't get out much.

Me- It happens. I'm really sorry to hear about Trooper Coble. He was a good man.

Lt.- Yeah, tomorrow's going to be rough. Hey, I gotta run inside, do you need anything? It's on me.

    Me- No thanks.

When he came back to the pumps, he had "bought" me a coffee, and we talked for another 15 minutes. He had some pretty strong opinions about "no gun" signs and the like. Very pro-2a. With that, we shook hands, he gave me his card and told me to keep it with my DL, and I left. No questions about if I had a LTCF, no asking for ID. Overall, I think it was a very positive experience.

Some people might say "never talk to the police no matter what, they're fishing". It doesn't sound like that's the case here. Sounds like he was showing genuine interest and talking about something he is passionate about. Good story and encounter imo.

And he told you to keep your card with your driver license? Sounds kinda like a get out of jail free card... lol

I wish more encounters were like this and more cops acted like he did. Regardless of what the officers POV is on the subject, they shouldn't let personal opinion override their proper enforcement of the law. Sounds like an awesome guy to have come in contact with.

Thanks for more ammunition against my "all police are anti-carry" friends' arguments, which they trot out with great regularity. It goes along with my "well, I sure know plenty of NRA instructors and RSOs who are cops and ex-cops."

Many of my closest friends are LEO. One of my carry pieces was given to me by a LEO when I got married. I've never, ever had a negative experience with a LEO. I will admit, though, it was nice to get a "cop coffee" from a state trooper.

Haha didn't even think of it. Sadly, the gas station we were at doesn't have donuts.

Not a bad way to end the day. Although I've never been offered cop coffee by a cop (or anyone else for that matter), I have had a number of encounters with various LEOs in my travels, and never a bad one.

Thanks for posting such an interesting experience.
