Traveling to Pittsburgh in August to visit the Gunsmith School. What else to do?
Howdy folks, so I'll be heading out to Pittsburgh early August for a school tour at the Pennsylvania Gunsmith School and was wondering what else there is I should see while out there. Me and the lady will be there for possibly two days not including travel days.
I'm a huge fan of history and the lady loves her shopping so suggestions for fun places for those themes are welcome.
Ill also be trying to size up appartment prices and etc for moving out there to go to school as well as the job market as I'll be needing good steady work when I move out there with her to attend (likely a year or two before actual schooling begins.) so if anyone knows good neighborhoods or appartments near to the school that I should take a look at I'd be happy for the imput.

The Carnegie Museum. Fort Pitt. Fort Necessity. Fort Ligonier. The Zoo.
Don't forget the Walking Tour of the Hill District.

Heinz History Center, Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum, Mt. Washington, Point State Park (now finally open with fountain running) Just Ducky Tours (City/River Tour on a WWII DUKW),
What kind of shopping? Kitchy, go to strip district, also good restaurants. High End, ross park mall.
PNC Park, best ballpark in baseball, home of the 20 year looser pirates, however they are currently at the top of the MLB right now so go see them now while the are still good.
To bad its not late august the PMSC/PAFOA group shoot is the 24th. PMSC is one of the best clubs in the area.

You have to ride the incline. Mt. Washington is well known for it's lookouts over the city. And the Point is pretty neat. Especially since they got the fountain up and running
There is also the Warhol and the Science Center.
Downtown Pittsburgh is not the shopping mecca that it once was but there are still stores available. Station Square offers a nice variety of shops and they sometimes have bands and the dancing water feature near Joe's Crab Shack is a nice touch.
If you go to the Carnegie Museum, you might as well take a little side trip to Phipps Conservatory (The Flower House). It is best seen during the beginning of each season but it is nice trip.
When you decide to relocate, consider Butler. It's about 40 min. from the city but the taxes are much lower. Sales tax is 6% compare to Pgh's 7%. And the wage tax is only 1%. I believe that brother told me that the cities wage tax is 4% but don't quote me.

The Carniege Science Center is neat. But its very kid oriented. The robot hall of fame is cool if you like that, especially robots in film and TV. They also have a huge model train setup if your into that as well. The temp exhibit changes and can be adult friendly, its about bikes now but I haven't seen it so I dont know how geared toward adults it is. It's cool to see, but if your here for two days and don't have kids with you I would probably skip it.
I believe you can tour the USS Requin separately.
Its also right next to the casino if that is your thing.Last edited by QuackXP; July 31st, 2013 at 06:17 PM.

If gun control worked, Chicago would be like Mayberry, instead of Thunderdome.

Mt. Washington is pretty nice; great views of the city. I take motorcycle rides up there and just chill out. Station Square and the Southside are just below with some good places to grab some food. The Pittsburgh Steak Co. has a hell of a steak! It's in the Southside, but can't remember what street.

If its this weekend, there is the 250th anniversary of Bushy Run. Reenactments and such.
It's just east of Pgh near Murrysville
Otherwise the Heinz history center and a Saturday morning in the strip is my vote. Hit Pamela's or Deluca's for breakfast!Last edited by PaleDriver; August 1st, 2013 at 08:03 PM.

Heinz History center has an exhibit titled Pennsylvania in the Civil War going on right now, It's pretty cool. There is a lot to see in the building and they close at 5. If you go, go early enough that you aren't rushed through it.
