Default AR-15 to buy under $1,000

I am look to buy an AR-15 that is a piston with Ambidextrous charging handle, fire select, and magazine release. Also I would like it to be chambered in .223 and 5.56

I am looking to use the AR for home defends, hunting, and at range.

Ideally, I would like to spend no more than $1,000.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Nick.

If it doesn't have to be a piston gun and you can manage another $100-200 you can score a Colt 6920. Offhand, I don't know of any piston guns in that price range as they usually bring a premium over a gas gun.

With a piston, you already are above 1k in most cases. By adding ambi controls, especially a CH that is normally $80 or above, I don't think it's possible. If you got your hands on an Adams Arms retrofit kit on sale you'd still be flirting with the $1k mark without ambi controls.

advice that is on point in my opinion

check out the Ruger series of piston rifles...they are a bit above your mark, but may be the closest.

out of stock, but you can use the model to find some more around the 1k mark

You can get a piston upper for less than/ close to $1,000.00. Doubt an entire rifle.

Stag model 8 is a piston. You can always add a charging handle, and ambi parts.

Any barrel labeled 5.56 with shoot both 5.56 and .223.

Unless you are running a suppressor or a lot of full auto skip the piston.

I'll echo the sentiment to buy the best carbine you can (BCM or Colt IMHO), then shop the ambi parts.

    YMMV

This even comes in a left handed configuration with the MSRP of $1,175. For $5 more you can even have the bolt HP & MPI tested!

OP, can I talk you out of a cheaply made piston gun for a well made DI gun?

    Pretty much.

You can tell the OP hasn't done any research on this and is hoping others will do his homework for him.

His open source collection techniques may not be as honed as ours...
