    Default poor eye relief

I recently obtained a Winchester Model 70 in 30-06 with a 4-12x scope. The scope is a Leupold Vari-X IIc model. The scope was already mounted on the rifle.

I have a hard time with eye relief on the scope. It's too far forward, but there is no room to shift the scope itself backwards in the rings.

As far as I can tell, there is no way to adjust the rings/mounts to go back further either.

Do I need different mounts/rings or a different scope? How would I determine what new mounts/rings I would need?

there are to many options for you to list them all here. we should start with your actual set up. pictures would help us see what is going on.

That particular scope is moved as far to the rear as it can be due to the ejection port on the rifle.

i know the scope is all the way back, but are there different mounts/rings I can get to get it closer?

I think you should just adjust your head placement on the stock, shorten the stock if you must.

No, because of the ejection port on the rifle. The front ring is already intruding into it.

You could swap out the ring base with a 1 pc picatinny base and a set of rings for the picatinny base. This will give you more room to move the scope back or forward.

The scope on my 700 does not come back far enough for my liking either. I plan to get another scope for it and I will change the mounts out also.

That would cover the ejection port.
